Mandla Vs. Lee 1983

The Mandla Vs Lee case was a famous case that addressed how one school discriminated against a young boy called Gurinder Singh Mandla, and refused him entry to the school if he did not remove his turban.

The case united the Sikh community after it was lost in two courts, and was then taken to the House of Lords where the Race Relations Act was called upon to safeguard the rights of the Sikhs.

The effort was led by the Guru Nanak Nishkam Sewak Jatha, and involved communicating with all local MPs before hand-delivering a petition to Margaret Thatcher, the Prime Minister at the time.

Below we have the case explained in detail by both Gurinder Singh and his father, the Late Sewa Singh Mandla - a lawyer who was adament that this injustice be fought. They both share their own perspectives and what drove the decision to safeguard the Sikhs.
